"Not only is health a normal condition, but it is our duty not only to attain it but to maintain it."
It is recognised worldwide by Doctors, Surgeons and Physiotherapists the importance Pilates plays in maintaining a healthy spine. When Joseph Pilates set up his first studio in New York in the 1930’s, Dancers went specifically to heal their injuries. Due to the success that Joseph Pilates had in healing these Dancers, the exercise technique evolved not just as a fitness regime but also as a means of reducing pain and preventing further injuries for the spine and for the whole body.

"I have referred patients from my spinal clinic to Pilates instructors for many years and have never had cause for complaint. Like any form of exercise in patients with back pain, Pilates has to be taught correctly. I only send patients to reputable instructors who understand how people with back pain are limited and who can therefore work with them within those limits. A sympathetic approach to patients with back pain and excellent training allow our local Pilates experts to achieve a high level of function in these people without causing further pain or damage. Like everything though "one size does not fit all" and Pilates has its place amongst other treatments and therapies. It is the responsibility of the doctor and Pilates instructor to realise this and tailor the treatment to the specific needs of the patient." Nick Birch, Consultant Spinal Surgeon, Northampton.
